Ground and shipboard platforms live on the DC side of this standard. The 400 Hz AC clauses are not your test — the 28 V and 270 V bus behaviour is.

Where programmes get caught out

  • No 400 Hz means no aircraft source

    Buying an aviation-grade AC source for a ground platform is a common and expensive mis-spec. The DC clauses are the requirement.

  • Engine-start droop is the hard case

    A slow ramp from deep undervoltage exercises hold-up behaviour that a step transient never reaches.

  • Depot sustainment outlives the instrument

    Programmes running 20+ years should confirm calibration and support horizons before standardising a rack.

  • MIL-STD-1399-300B was cancelled in 2018 and most published summaries have not caught up

    Notice 1 of 25 September 2018 cancelled MIL-STD-1399-300B (24 April 2008) and superseded it with MIL-STD-1399-300-1, Section 300 Part 1, Low Voltage Electric Power, Alternating Current. Medium-voltage systems moved to Part 2. Vendor pages and test-lab capability sheets still cite 300B routinely. Check which one your contract invokes before the acceptance procedure is written, because the part numbering alone will not tell you.

  • Shipboard is three power types, and two of them are 400 Hz

    In the superseded 300B text — still the most widely republished version — Type I is 440 V rms, 60 Hz, three-phase ungrounded ship service power, with 115 V rms derived through transformers. Types II and III are 440 V rms 400 Hz, and Type III 115/200 V rms 400 Hz three-phase four-wire grounded wye is the supply provided for avionics shops and aircraft servicing. Type I and Type II characteristics were coordinated with STANAG 1008 Edition 8. A bench built only for 60 Hz cannot cover a shipboard programme that reaches the aviation side of the ship. We have not read the current 300-1 text, so treat those figures as the superseded revision until you have the current document.
